A Peek at This Colorful Week

To prepare for our upcoming unit on Plants, we planted seeds on Monday.  The students chose from sunflowers or wildflower mixture.

We put gravel in the bottom to aid in drainage.

On Tuesday we did the coolest experiment-- Rainbow Milk.  You add drops of food coloring on the top of a layer of milk.  Then dip a Q-tip into dish soap and then into the milk.

It makes the colors swirl and mix.

So neat!

On Wednesday you might have noticed a few new colorful freckles on your little one.  We made "Moon Prints".

You mix soap, water, and paint in a bowl.  Then blow bubbles into it with a straw.  When the bubbles rise up over the edge of the bowl, you lay your paper on the bubbles which makes a beautiful, crater-looking print.

Messy but fun!

On Friday we did another really cool rainbow experiment--Rainbow Walk.

four of the cups are half-full of water, the other three are empty.  We made the cups with water colorful by adding food coloring.  Then we put folded strips of paper towels into each cup to join them all together.

The children made predictions about what might happen.  Most of them said nothing would happen.

When we returned from recess, the colors had travelled!

I will leave it over the weekend to see what happens.
After the weekend, the cups had all leveled out and the colors were even darker.

Our little seeds were starting to grow on Friday.

Our latest favorite, "Robot Counting".

It was a great week!

STEM Challenge # 7 and Goodbye Dr. Seuss

After reading Horton Hatches an Egg, the students were challenged to build a nest that could protect an egg and support an elephant.

Efe's first attempt failed but did not deter him.

Zaila's nest of stuffed animals failed as well.

Klowi's first attempt cracked under pressure.

Allison used Unifix cubes for a stronger base.

And it worked!

Jess and Levi teamed up to build a double decker nest that protected two eggs.

Efe soon learned that blocks were a better choice.

I'm pretty sure this attempt failed.  ;-)

Here we are showing off our cute Loraxes.  The mustache is made from tracing your child's hands.

Here's our "Cat in the Hat Crafttivity".  The children wrote whether or not they'd like the Cat to visit their home.

Here are our Things 1 & 2 and one of my favorite Dr. Seuss quotes.
From there to here,
From here to there,
Funny things are everywhere!

Another favorite Dr. Seuss quote:

You have brains in your head,
You have feet in your shoes,
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.

Greeen Eggs!?!

We wrapped up this week's celebration of Dr. Seuss with none other than Green Eggs.

Each child cracked an egg into the electric skillet.

We only had to fish out a few shells.

And the spoon....

They were great egg crackers

It was fun to watch!

Best expression!

18 eggs in all went into the skillet.

Then we stirred...

And somehow they turned green....  Ok, another great expression!

Mmmmm....so appetizing!

We do so like Green Eggs!
And we would eat them with a goat.

And we would eat them in a boat.

And we would eat them in a house.

And we would eat them with a mouse.
We would eat them here or there....

We would eat them ANYWHERE!!!!
